In partnership with Person County Schools, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill launched Carolina Community Academy (CCA) — an innovative school for K-2 students in Roxboro, N.C. — to serve the students, families, and community in Person County.
CCA’s classrooms function similarly to those found throughout North Carolina and work to integrate evidence-based practices and innovative approaches, improved and integrated curriculum, social-emotional learning, and robust wraparound services.
Led by the UNC School of Education, CCA brings together schools and units from across the UNC-Chapel Hill campus, drawing upon a range of academic and professional strengths, to ensure each student reaches their maximum potential. To date, the continually growing coalition includes:
- UNC School of Social Work
- UNC Adams School of Dentistry
- UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health
- UNC School of Library and Information Science
- UNC School of Medicine (Allied Health and Pediatrics)
- Morehead Planetarium and Science Center
- Sonja Haynes Stone Center for Black Culture and History
- Carolina Athletics
The North Carolina General Assembly passed a law in 2016 that directed the UNC System to create nine laboratory schools in partnership with public school districts. Carolina Community Academy is the ninth to open across the state. In compliance with North Carolina House Bill 1030, CCA will operate for a minimum of five years. Governance and operation legislation was updated in North Carolina House Bill 532.
